Dan Wright

Professional Biography: Dan Wright received his PhD at London School of Economics. He is currently at University of Sussex, UK. His two areas of research are applied memory (esp. eyewitness testimony) and research methods (esp. statistics).

Personal Statement: What I find most engaging about my research is when you do that first graph and see whether the data look right. And the most "engaging" part is when they don't look right.

I personally find applied topics more interesting than pure theory topics. When I talk to my "theory" friends about research, and I get excited and say "wow, this could be applied to buying baked beans”, or “it explains why otherwise decent people could vote for George Bush”, or “why I forgot to bring my lecture slides in today" they chuckle. But I stare at them with equal excitement when they talk about some theory of processing speed in primates being nonlinear.

Most researchers are some kind of mixture of applied/basic, but I guess I consider myself more applied because most of my research ideas come from considering how cognition works outside of the lab. The best research is both.

Advice? Have fun in both research and teaching. We're not paid enough not to enjoy what we do!
